The development strategy of the São Francisco river valley, based on the exploitation of its waters to make irrigated farming viable, has helped to consolidate economic hubs that stand out in the panorama of Brazil’s semi-arid zone. Given the vitality of this process, the urbanization in the municipalities that house these hubs is proceeding at great speed, with the resulting degradation of the small towns originally designed to house only the early settlers. TPF Engineering was commissioned by Codevasf to prepare the master plan of the residential clusters located in the Bebedouro, Senador Nilo Coelho, and Maria Teresa irrigated perimeters, in the municipality of Petrolina. The purpose was to plan the refurbishment of these clusters by proposing improvements to various systems, including the road network, water supply, sewage disposal, and the final destination of solid waste.
