AMAZON BASIN AQUIFERS

The Amazon Region is characterized by quite a favorable hydrogeological configuration, owing to the presence, in over half of its territory, of sedimentary deposits of variable lithology and the occurrence of volumes of high permeability. TPF Engineering was commissioned to analyze the aquifers of the sedimentary basins in the Amazon Hydrogeological Province in Brazil, located in an area of approximately 741,000 mi². The aim of these studies is to generate knowledge on the major aquifer systems of the region; to carry out pilot hydrogeological studies, on a larger scale, in five important urban areas (Macapá, Porto Velho, Rio Branco, Santarém, and Tabatinga); and to prepare a proposal to implement an environmental protection and sustainable management plan for the underground water resources of the Hydrogeological Provinces of the Amazon and Orinoco rivers, which also include areas in Bolivia, Peru, Ecuador, Colombia, and Venezuela.
