Up to the year 2000, Mossoró, the second largest municipality in the State of Rio Grande do Norte, had its water supply drawn from 19 wells. In that year, the Mossoró Water Pipeline was inaugurated, which also supplies the neighboring municipality of Serra do Mel, catering to a total population of 230,000 inhabitants at that time. The project also includes drawing water from the Açu River, a water treatment station with an outflow of 1,350 m³/h, five pumping stations and a 74-mi water pipeline. TPF Engineering was in charge of the engineering project, as well as the supervision and management of the system installation, designed to ensure water supply to the population for the next 20 years.
